Google Dishes Content Network Ad Best Practices

By David Utter

The Inside AdWords crew has six suggestions for better targeting campaigns destined to run on Google's content networks.

Now that Google has begun offering Content Bids for targeting content networks, the Inside Adwords blog has some suggestions for making it work better for advertisers.

Focus for AdGroups forms the important point of creating content-targeted campaigns. Google recommends "each Ad Group should focus on a specific theme and a specific audience."

As those groups get created, the advertiser should try to include variations on the keywords for the group that still maintain the theme of the ads. Keeping the keywords related while offering some variations on the theme could help get a well-crafted ad in front of the desired audience.

By extension, advertisers need to take advantage of negative keywords and site exclusions to keep their ads from appearing in front of audiences unlikely to convert to customers.

Google recommends keeping a close eye on the tracking data for the ads, and to test those ads frequently to derive the maximum benefit from content network targeted ad placement.
